Security chips to prevent document forgery
The Japanese Hitachi Group has developed a miniature chip which can be incorporated into paper to secure the identity of documents. The MEW chip has a storage capacity of 128 bits. Stored information can be called up cable free over a distance of up to 30 cm. Measuring 60 micrometers thick and with an edge length of 0.4 mm, the chip is so small and thin that it can survive undamaged throughout the everyday use of the paper it is imbedded in. Although Hitachi believes it is technically possible to develop a rewriteable chip, it concedes this may damage the chip's ability to protect against forgery. If the chip encodes no more than a 128 bit ID number, other information could be excluded.
