TechNova at Signexpo

TechNova's stall at Sign Expo was essentially an oasis, a gallery of wide format prints on various TechNova media for the signage and display industry. TechNova also sponsored Dr Nicholas Hellmuth of FLAAR at the accompanying conference. Hellmuth's presentation on how to decide on upgrading a wide format printer or buying a new one was among the more lucid and instructive at the conference. Hellmuth offered plenty of tips of how to analyse the claims of manufacturer's who are prone "to bait and switch" their features and speed claims, and other advantages. "Speed claims are generally based on draft mode which is generally useless," he said. Speed claims also need to consider time taken for cleaning and calibration and, in some cases, "a good RIP will make a mediocre printer much better." Hellmuth highlighted the role of testing printers, Rips, media and inks in actual production conditions which his organisation has done, and he suggested that some media have delicate surfaces and are difficult to laminate without lifting off the surface. The drying time on some media can be inordinately long and some rough substrates can even destroy printheads. Dr Hellmuth is an archaeologist and photographer who has additionally made the Foundation for Latin American Anthropological Research into a centre for testing imaging equipment.
