The 29th All India Printers' Conference and the 2nd Asia Pacific Technovision was held from March 10th to 13th, concurrently with the Print Pack Show. The event was hosted by Delhi Printers Association and sponsored by the All India Federation of Master Printers. Indian Newspapers Society and Indian Printing Packaging and Allied Machinery Manufacturers Association (IPAMA) were the co-sponsors.
A major breakthrough was the coming together of IPAMA, AIFMP and DPA to organize these two events; a huge step forward in industry co-operation.
The Exhibition was well received by the visitors. New Indian-made machines and world-class consumables were launched at almost every stand. This bodes well for the state of the Industry, especially with the medium and small players also contributing to its growth. The Show provided a special platform for the industry professionals and the exhibitors to interact at a different level and get insights into the technological advancements in the Industry.
Many of the exhibitors were a little unhappy with the timing of the event, March being fiscal year-end on the one hand, and school / college examinations as well as Holi festival keeping some visitors away from the Show. However, the mood was not all gloomy, with many participants drawing large number of visitors and generating good business.
TechNova at Print Pack 2001
TechNova recorded an estimated 10,000 visitors, with each of its Business Units being a major draw. The 300 sq. meters stand with twin domes was a visual delight and an educational experience with live demos as well as unique print galleries. The major attractions were :
- World's first CtP (Computer-to-Plate) Gallery (described below);
- A unique new range environment-friendly pressroom chemicals;
- Display of colour newspapers printed using NovaSharp Laser Film, supported by demos;
- Display of colour jobs printed in the US, Europe and India using NovaDom Polyester Laser Plates, with live demos using HP laser printers & AB Dick small offset press
- Breath-taking blow-ups using NovaJet large-format inkjet media, with live demos using HP and Roland large-format inkjet printers
- Unbelievable desktop outputs on Epson & HP desktop inkjet printers using NovaJet inkjet media for Business Graphics
- And, most surprisingly, the greatest draw was TechNova's Retail Outlet, a replica of its countrywide outlets popularly known as TROs. The over-the-counter sales far exceeded our expectations.
A word about the world's first CtP Gallery:
TechNova is the only supplier in India of the entire range of plates for Computer-to-Plate systems. To highlight this unique position, TechNova had undertaken an ambitious project with the co-operation of Pragati Offset, Agfa, and basysPrint.
A unique display of prints made from the following plates was a major attraction :
- Agfa's Thermal plates exposed in Belgium using the Thermal CtP system,
- Agfa's Silver plates exposed in Belgium using the Silver CtP system,
- TechNova's AQU negative plates exposed in Germany using basysPrint CtP system,
- TechNova's Alympia positive plates exposed in Hyderabad at Pragati Offset using conventional film-based system.
All the plates were exposed using the same digital file created specially for the project by Pragati Offset. All the plates were sent to Pragati Offset and printed under identical conditions. Full production data was displayed along with the prints.
This was the first time that Graphic Arts professionals were able to touch & feel the CtP plates, and compare the results of different plate technologies side-by-side with regard to plate quality, print results, machine set-up time, start-up waste, etc.
A special report on this project, with expert comments highlighting the pros & cons of each technology, will be circulated shortly to TKX members.
