Xerox engineering systems redefines color printing in the Graphic Arts market with the Launch of the ColorgrafX X2
Xerox Engineering Systems (XES) today set a new standard for wide-format color printing in the graphic arts industry with the introduction of the ColorgrafX X2 piezoelectric inkjet printer, a new 54-inch, six-color inkjet printer for high-volume print-for-pay and in-house graphic arts production environments. Tapping into its roots as a leading technology innovator, XES designed the ColorgrafX X2 with PixelCorrect, a patent-pending image technology that virtually eliminates banding and delivers sellable quality output at the printer's fastest speed, eliminating draft mode as a "wasted" print speed.
ColorgrafX X2 prints at both 360 dpi and 720 dpi resolution and offers three different print categories, all of which produce sellable image quality. In its "productivity" mode, the ColorgrafX X2 prints at 431 square-feet/hour; in "quality" mode it prints at 260 square feet/hour; and in the "high quality" mode it prints at 130 square feet/hour. This new color inkjet is targeted to digital color printers, graphic arts service bureaus, color photo labs, exhibit builders, quick printers, reprographic houses, and corporate in-house printers. A 36-inch model for the graphic arts industry will be available shortly.
"The classic problem in wide-format color printing has been that quality suffers at high speed and banding has been an ever-present nuisance for inkjet printers when operated at their highest speeds," said Michael Robertson, ColorgrafX X2 product marketing manager. "For the customer, that's been money thrown away with each draft print. With our PixelCorrect technology, banding is virtually eliminated, allowing the ColorgrafX X2 to produce sellable prints in its fastest print mode."
The ColorgrafX X2 prints in six colors black, cyan, magenta, and yellow, plus two tonal inks, light cyan and light magenta that produce smooth blended images and increase the amount of reproducible colors within the standard web offset printing (SWOP) color gamut.
The combination of retaining outstanding image quality while still producing at the fastest print speed makes the ColorgrafX X2 the most efficient color solution for high-volume print-for-pay and in-house production environments.
"The ColorgrafX X2 establishes XES as a leader in the color printing market," said Agnes Lewis, CEO, XES. "By creating a solution that delivers maximum quality sellable color prints, at faster production speeds than any other inkjet printer, XES has raised the bar on performance and productivity in color printing to an unprecedented level."
Oil inks need no drying time
Reflecting XES' continued focus on improving image quality, the ColorgrafX X2 uses instant-drying oil-based, pigmented inks that are water, UV and smudge-resistant. As a result, the prints do not require any additional drying time and can be laminated, mounted, and/or finished immediately after printing. The inks also resist the effects of outdoor exposure in most conditions, a critical element for many graphic arts applications that require durability for many years.
XES' newest wide-format printer also features piezoelectric inkjet heads that increase productivity, and, in some printing applications, prints up to four times the print speed of thermal inkjet technology. Piezoelectric technology is also longer lasting than thermal technology because the inkjet heads do not corrode, making it ideal for graphic arts applications where printing speed, long print runs, color fastness and durability are vital.
As a result, the ColorgrafX X2 offers a faster throughput and lower total cost of operation, providing customers with shorter turnaround time on print jobs.
Online media rolls
A full line of media papers, films, fabrics and vinyls is available for use in the ColorgrafX X2 to accommodate most indoor and outdoor applications. And a two-roll online media supply takes the pain and unproductive time out of changing media types between print jobs. Using online media rolls means that multiple media can be loaded simultaneously and changed with the push of a button or click of a mouse, eliminating the need to halt production to change media.
The ColorgrafX X2 is supported by the NTX 2.0 RIP (Raster Image Processor), with PostScript level 3 support, and Onyx Postershop 5.0 software RIP. In addition, XES will launch a ColorgrafX X2 solution designed to meet the needs of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and computer-aided design (CAD) applications during the first half of 2001.
