Description and Features
NovaDom, the global leader in desktop offset plates, now comes to you with exciting new features :
- Universal Compatibility with a range of laser printers, digital copiers and photo-copiers.
- Unique "EasyKleen" coating formulation ensures a scum-free background during start-up and press stoppages, minimising paper waste.
- Innovative "AntiGrease" layer safeguards the surface from fingerprints once cleaned, thereby preventing plate cancellations.
- User-friendly "QuicKling" treatment ensures that the plate fits snugly around the plate cylinder, facilitating quick makereadies.
NovaDom ULR has inherited the following features that helped NovaDom win the GATF InterTech Technology Award, the nobel prize of the global Graphic Arts industry :
- Direct-to-Plate : NovaDom can be imaged directly from digital files on laser printers or digital copiers; and from hard copy originals (i.e. artworks) on conventional photo-copiers. Eliminates the need for cameras, platemakers, imagesetters, platesetters, processors, etc.
- No processing : NovaDom does not require any processing after imaging. Just mount it on the press and print!
- No effluents : Zero chemical effluents and pollutants.
- Use both sides : NovaDom can be imaged and printed from both sides with similar print quality and run-length.
- Unbeatable robustness : NovaDom is, quite simply, the longest running desktop polyester plate on earth!
- Faithful reproduction : Image resolution of NovaDom is limited only by the imaging device. Using a 1200 dpi laser printer, you could reproduce halftone dot range of 3% to 97%, micro-fine lines, reversed text, solids, screen tints.
- Dimensionally stable : Ideally suited for two-colour jobs, NovaDom is frequently used for four-colour printing by customers having high-end laser printers and a precision multicolour offset presses.
- Daylight handling : As NovaDom surface is not photo-sensitive, it can be handled under normal room-light conditions.
- Zero failure guarantee : Each NovaDom plate carries a unique PIN (Personal Identification Number) on the gripper edge.
This is TechNova’s guarantee to you that every plate will perform as promised.
Applications
Ideal for all small offset applications : Brochures, Newsletters, Sales Literature, Stationery, Forms, Labels, Business Cards, Books, Posters, Leaflets, etc.
Recommended Imaging Devices
- Laser Printers
TechNova has been actively engaged with some laser printer manufacturers to modify their products to serve as “Platemakers” for NovaDom plates. Use of these brands produce the best results, and do not require baking and cleaning. The plates can go directly to the press after imaging.
At this time, the relevant laser printer brands for the Indian market are HP LaserJet 5000 & Xante PlateMaker (all models).

- Photo-copiers
TechNova has had limited success in getting photo-copier manufacturers to produce a "Platemaker" for NovaDom. Amongst the current Indian brands, the following work best with NovaDom : However, baking and cleaning after imaging are necessary. The brands are Canon NP 1215, Ricoh 4215 & 4422.

How it works
- Imaging on a laser printer / digital copier : Scan in and/or create the complete page on your desktop computer using standard page make-up software. Proof it, if necessary, by taking a print on paper. To image the plate, feed it into the laser printer/digital copier and print.
- Imaging on a conventional photo-copier : Position the hard copy original / artwork on the photo-copier as usual. Feed the plate and print.
- Imaging on both sides : Image the first side as above, and repeat the process for the second side. Then print from first & the second side in any sequence.
- Deletion : Check the plate for unwanted text, solids, lines, tape-marks, scribbles, etc. Apply NovaDom Delete with a brush to remove the unwanted images. Remove excess deletion fluid with a moist cotton swab.
- Background cleaning : Check the plate for unwanted toner-scatter in the non-image areas. If your imaging device is not well maintained, you may need to remove the background toner scatter by wiping the surface with NovaDom Plate Cleaner or a mild detergent (e.g. a Bar Soap) before start-up.
Excessive background toner scatter caused by old or badly maintained / calibrated laser printers and photo-copiers may prove difficult to remove using NovaDom Plate Cleaner or a mild detergent. In such cases, many customers have successfully used an abrasive based detergent powder (e.g. Vim) after sieving it to remove large particles. Though NovaDom will obviously not perform at its best using such imaging devices and abrasive cleaners, it is robust enough to withstand the abuse.
- Baking : To ensure long run lengths, the toner needs to be fused adequately to the plate after imaging. Some laser printers come with preinstalled fusers e.g. HP LaserJet 5000, Xante PlateMaker III, etc. which automatically fuse the plate after imaging in one pass. If your laser printer does not fuse the plate adequately, you will require a specially designed baking oven supplied by TechNova and many other vendors. Imaged plate should be inserted in a baking oven which provides uniform heating of the entire plate surface at 150oC for 45 seconds.
For plates that are imaged on both sides, it is necessary to flip the plate after baking the first side and repeat the baking process (unless the oven is designed to bake both sides simultaneously). For turning the plate onto the other side, please use a stiff polyester sheet. Avoid holding the plate with your fingers to prevent injury as well as curling of the plate.
Please note that the design and fabrication of the baking oven is critical for satisfactory performance of the plate. TechNova offers free service to test whether your oven is suitable for use with NovaDom.
- Punching : Punch the plate with a NovaDom Punch or a suitable plate punch after imaging. Punching is not required for presses with a plate clamping system. TechNova supplies prepunched NovaDom plates.
- Printing : Mount the plate on the press. For best results, use NovaDom Fount. Wet the plate thoroughly and commence printing.
- Reprinting : Although some customers successfully preserve the plate after printing for future reprints, TechNova does not recommend reuse as a general practice, as the toner may wear off the plate if excessive pressure is applied in trying to clean off the ink. After printing, the ink should be carefully cleaned off the plate with a cotton swab and NovaDom Plate Cleaner or a mild detergent and preserving gum evenly applied thereafter. The quality of ink used plays an important role as an inferior quality ink may take longer time to clean off the plate.
